 Nuwara Eliya (Srilanka)

Nuwara Eliya is the main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry situated at around 2000m above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations. Once a pleasure retreat of the european planters the town is still very much an english town with many english style bungalows and buildings. Nuwara Eliya is a good escape for those who miss cool breeze in tropical Sri Lanka at any time of the year. Local tourists flock to this town in their 'season' from march to may when it is the hottest duration for the town. Nuwara Eliya offers many activities for tourists including visits to tea plantations golfing, horse riding, boating, hiking and of course exploring the beauty of the landscaped gardens, waterfalls and plateaus.

  • How to get there:

    Nuwara Eliya can be reached by both bus and train from the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, with both modes of transportation travelling via the city of Kandy. Colombo is home to the island’s only international airport, a facility which maintains connections with European destinations such as England, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands as well as a variety of Asian destinations.

    Nuwara Eliya (City of Lights), also known as 'Little England', was the favourite hill station of the British who tried to create Nuwara Eliya into a typical English Village.

  • By Road:

    From Colombo, there are two main routes to get to Nuwara Eliya - via Kandy or via Hatton. Most buses from Colombo go via Kandy. For a trip that long, to go by Inter-city bus.


  • By Rail:

    The train also connects Colombo with Nuwara Eliya via Kandy, but takes even longer than the bus. Train services stop short of the city, at Nanu Oya.


  • By Air:

    From the airport is best achieved by taxi. Most of the reputable hotels in Nuwara Eliya will be able to arrange private transport for guests fro the airport to the hotel. Alternatively, it is possible to take a bus into Colombo from where public transport options to Nuwara Eliya available.

    Water Falls: There are many popular water falls around the town. Many could be visited as a part of trekking and/or hiking expeditions. Ramboda Falls - 329 ft. Devon Falls drops 97 metres and is named after Devon, a pioneer coffee planter. It is 6 Km west of Thalawakelle and there is a special parking and view. Laksapana Falls - off the Nuwara Eliya - Kandapola road. The Nuwara Eliya beer is brewed from the water of the stream.

    Trekking and Hiking: Nuwara Eliya offers right basics for thrilling games like trekking and hiking. Pidurutalagala (2550m), highest mountain peak of Sri Lanka, is located just north of the town. Hiking is allowed to the altitude of 7000ft.

     Avoid wearing expensive jewellery and flashing valuable items in public places, and keep their cash in places inaccessible to pickpockets.

     All visitors are advised to be immunized against typhoid and hepatitis B prior to their trip to Nuwara Eliy.

     Visitors should dress conservatively while holidaying in Nuwara Eliya with special attention to dress required when visiting temples and shrines. it’s important to cover knees and shoulders, and to remove shoes before entering any  temple.
